Newborn photos are incredibly special… but let’s be honest, they can also feel a little overwhelming. You just had a baby, you’re healing, you’re exhausted, and your toddler probably wants a snack right now.
As a mom of two little boys, I get it. Truly.
So here’s the part I want to say clearly:
Your newborn session doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
The candid moments, the snuggles, the yawns, and the tiny stretches are usually the ones you’ll treasure forever.
I made this guide because it’s something I needed myself as a postpartum mom prepping for newborn photos. My hope is that it helps your session feel calm, natural, and just a little bit less stressful.

What to expect during a newborn session

A Slow Baby Led Pace
Newborn sessions unfold entirely at your baby’s rhythm. Feeding breaks, diaper changes, pausing to soothe your baby.. all normal and expected. Your photographer anticipates this and creates space for it.
There will be “just need Mom” moments. There might be tears. There will definitely be pauses. And that is exactly how newborn sessions are meant to go.
Connection over perfection
The moments you might think are “messy” like the snuggles, the baby yawns, the soft forehead kisses, those are the photos you’ll love the most! I promise! No one is expecting you to pose perfectly or know what to do. Natural is always better and turn into the most loved photos for many families. You're photographer will take care to pose you and your baby.
Timing that works for you
Some families prefer photos within the first two weeks when babies are sleepiest. Others wait a few weeks (3-8) and capture more awake, personality filled images. There is no wrong choice just what fits your family. Both turn out so sweet and capture the newborn phase.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR NEWBORN FAMILY PHOTOS

1. Start With Your Space
Neutrals are classic, but bold colors can photograph beautifully when used intentionally.
If your home is mostly neutral (white walls, light wood, beige furniture): Rich, warm tones add depth and interest.
Examples:
- Mom in a rust or deep olive dress
- Dad in a cream or oatmeal sweater
- Baby swaddled in soft ivory or warm taupe
If your home is bright or colorful (colorful art, bold furniture, patterned rugs): Softer tones help balance the scene.
Examples:
- Mom in a cream, beige, or soft gray dress
- Dad in light denim or soft brown
- Baby in a simple white or neutral onesie
2. Choose Comfort First
Holding your baby comfortably matters more than anything. Soft, breathable fabrics photograph beautifully and feel good to wear, especially postpartum.
Examples:
- A loose cotton or linen dress that allows easy movement
- A soft knit sweater paired with relaxed pants
- A flowy top that doesn’t feel restrictive while feeding or cuddling
- Avoid stiff denim, tight waistbands, or anything you feel the urge to constantly adjust.
3. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Matching outfits can feel flat and overly styled. A cohesive palette feels natural and elevated.
Example palette:
- Mom: soft cream or blush
- Dad: warm gray or camel
- Toddler: muted sage or light denim
- Baby: ivory or oatmeal
Different tones, same overall feel.
Other options:
- Earth tones (tan, olive, rust, soft brown)
- Cool neutrals (cream, gray, soft blue)
4. Most Important: Be Yourself
These photos are part of your story, not a trend. The best outfits are ones that feel like you on a good day.
Examples:
If you live in cozy sweaters → wear a sweater
If you love dresses → choose a dress that feels effortless
If you’re more casual → a soft tee layered with texture works beautifully
When you feel comfortable and confident, it shows in the photos every time.
*Another Tip: Ask your photographer for photos of your baby in their diaper, they turn out so cute.

How to prepare your home

- Pick a Cozy, Well-Lit Space
Your master bedroom, nursery, or living room usually work great. Natural window light is your best friend.
- No Deep Cleaning Required
You just had a baby..this is not the moment to scrub baseboards!! A quick tidy of nightstands or dresser tops is plenty.
- Warm Things Up
Babies love warmth. Turning up the thermostat or using a space heater helps keep them comfy and settled.
- Gather a Few Essentials
Think: swaddles, burp cloths, white noise, pacifier, backup outfits.

How to Prepare your baby

- Feed your baby right before the session.
- Expect breaks throughout, completely normal.
- Don’t stress about baby acne, dry skin, or flakes. Photographers work with all of it, and honestly, it’s part of the sweetness of this season :)

How to prepare older siblings

- Let them join at the beginning while they’re excited.
- Keep expectations realistic (5 minutes may be all you get, and that’s enough).
- A quiet activity or small reward afterward helps a lot.
- Keep your morning slow and simple.
- Lay out outfits the night before.
- Have snacks nearby.
Tell your photographer anything you are nervous about, they are there to help.
And truly, once the session starts, let yourself breathe. Set the pressure down. Your photographer will guide you, adjust as needed, and capture the moments you may not even notice happening!!

A Final Note
If you’re feeling nervous or not “put together,” please hear this: you are doing better than you think.
Newborn photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about this fleeting, tender moment in your family’s life. And the best photos? They’re almost always the candid ones! The ones where you’re holding your baby close, comforting a fuss, or laughing at your toddler’s antics.
Trust your photographer. Trust the process. Show up as you are. You'll treasure these forever.
